Electromyography

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of muscles, both at rest and during contraction. It helps to detect nerve or muscle damage, such as peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, or nerve root compression. EMG is usually performed by inserting fine needle-like electrodes into the muscles to record the electrical signals generated by muscle fibers contracting. The results allow the doctor to evaluate the functionality of the muscles and nerves and plan appropriate treatment.

How is Electromyography performed?

Electromyography (EMG) is performed as follows:

  1. The patient sits or lies down in a comfortable position, and the doctor inserts fine needle-like electrodes into the selected muscles.
  2. The device records electrical signals at rest and during muscle contraction when the patient is asked to perform specific movements.
  3. In some cases, surface electrodes are also used to record muscle activity over a wider area to analyze nerve and muscle function.
  4. The procedure allows the health of the muscles and nerves to be assessed and damage to be identified.

In what cases should Electromyography be performed?

Electromyography (EMG) is performed in the following cases:

  • if a patient has muscle weakness, cramps, numbness or tingling, to determine the cause of nerve or muscle damage;
  • if peripheral neuropathy, root compression or myopathy is suspected;
  • after trauma or nerve damage, to assess nerve and muscle recovery;
  • to monitor the effectiveness of therapy in patients with chronic neurological or muscle diseases.
